               Zafarraya

    HISTORY AND LANDSCAPE

Zaffaraya is situated north east of Malaga. Because of its proximity to the coast and fine agricultural land Zafarraya has been populated since prehistoric times and has many historic remains.Zafarraya lies at the foot of the north face of the Sierra Tejeda Mountains.  If you want a feeling of the real Spain, you will find it here in Zafarraya. It is not on the 'tourist trail' but the people are warm and friendly and the old town is well worth a visit

.

    Places to visit

An interesting feature of the nearby countryside is an enourmous U-shaped gap in the mountains, known as El Boquete de Zafarraya (The Zafarraya Pass). A road runs through the gap linking the Provinces of Malaga and Granada. This pass has, since time immemorial, played a key role in the history of the settlers of the adjacent territories; in fact, archaeological excavations carried out in 1983 point to human presence in the area over 30,000 years ago: remains were discovered of the jawbone of a male Homo Sapiens -better known as Neanderthal Man- from the Le Moustier era of the mid Palaeolithic period. Other prehistoric remains found near El Boquete de Zafarraya are: the caves of Cueva de los Guaicos and Abrigo de El Espino, both of which belong to the Neolithic period, and evidence of a Bronze Age settlement in the 2nd century A.D. at Cerro de La Negreta.

    Homo Neanderthalensis

Neanderthals lived roughly 15.000 to 30.000 years ago and lived in much of Europe, part of Asia, and the Middle East. The first fossils humans to be discovered, Neanderthals have long been the focus of anthropological investigation. More bones of Neanderthals are known than for any other fossil hominine group, including some 30 nearly complete skeletons, so this preoccupation within the anthropological profession is understandable.

Neanderthal anatomy represents a mixture of primitive characters, derived characters that are shared with other hominines, and derived characters that are unique to Neanderthals. In general terms, this species may be described as being robustly built, heavily muscled, and short in stature. Evidence of the heavy musculature appears in the extremely large muscle attachments and the bowing of the long bones. This implies that the species was involved in daily, routine, heavy work.

This species existed in a cold climate, at the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age.

The last Neanderthal remains were found in Zafarraya.
